I don’t actually LOVE romance dramas! The more likely story is that I’m super picky, not a fan of the frustration they inevitably cause me, and would rather avoid them altogether. Even when I think I enjoy one at the time, I end up looking back on it like, “man, that was wack.” LOL. I’ve been burned too many times!

Usually when someone recommends a drama to me (or others), I cry a little on the inside when I come to find out it’s a romcom or heavy on the romance. I can’t help but think that there’s so much more to watch! I remember a time when I was just dipping my toes into k-dramas, and one of the best recommendations I received was to watch Vampire Prosecutor. It had exactly what I could enjoy in a drama; a compelling mystery, a great cast, and no romance. The supernatural element was a unique touch, too. That means no crazy interloping in-laws or rivals, noble idiocy, or other inane gestures that are supposed to be “sweet”. Being a jerk? Wrist grabs? Controlling or pushy behavior? Keep it!

Even when a drama is popular for supposedly doing things the right way (Because This Life Is Our First is one that immediately comes to mind), I’m just sort of like… meh. Let me tuck into a drama about cults instead. Lately I’ve also realized that I prefer my romance to be the icing on the cake rather than the whole entree. Mystery Queen had a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it hint of a romance, two leads with great chemistry, and I ate that shit up haha. I love when dramas flirt around with the idea of a relationship without pushing it, because why ruin a good thing? (The Best Hit, I’m looking at you.)

So, in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, here are some rare favorites of mine (’cause I’m not that heartless!) (more…)

    Strawberry Night (2013)

After 2 years of waiting, I finally watched Strawberry Night: Invisible Rain! And it totally got me, I was absorbed. I think the series really gets its footing in longform. The episodes in the original drama were a little hamfisted at times and unevenly paced (some episodes being drawn out to three episodes and others being limited to one), but I think the film format fully allowed the writers to explore all parts of the crime while developing character and exploring backstories. Strawberry Night still employs a lot of the conventions that the drama follows, but I was so hooked by the characterization (as usual) that I didn’t really mind that it felt like I was watching an extended Strawberry Night episode/SP.

We get to hang out with a bunch of characters we all know and love with varying amounts of screen time (Imaizumi! we hardly knew ya), but the best one we were introduced to was Makita Isao (Osawa Takao), the homme fatale.

    Day 15: Favorite Dialogue

I usually watched “Strawberry Night” (Fuji TV / 2012) episodes in pairs since they had a tendency to extend cases beyond an episode. Because it was so late in the game I thought that the episode in question (9) would be a shorter case, but this ended up being another two-part tale! It was also better than average, and helped me gain insight into two things: I wanted to know what was going on with Himekawa Reiko and Kikuta (puppy dog prince Nishijima Hidetoshi), because anyone with eyes could tell that there was SOMETHING there. When I watched this in April 2012, I hadn’t watched the prequel, so I also wanted to know more about Himekawa’s relationship with her parents and how she had been coping with her assault since… and boy did this episode deliver. Strawberry Night I

Before I get into it, there’s an SP that precedes this drama, and it would have helped some if I watched it beforehand but whateva whateva. I wasn’t planning on watching Strawberry Night at all (it’s no Gonzo, or SPEC) but there’s no harm in watching another cop drama! It’s kind of like a grittier and glossier version of BOSS… kinda. Anyway–
