As someone who was once (still is?) a big manga fan, it’s no surprise I love webtoons! They’re really fun to read and a great way to kill time on the subway, waiting in line at COSTCO, etc. Install LINE Webtoon on your phone and let the magic happen. Here are some I’ve read:
10th Dimension Boys by Cutbu
My first webtoon, forever in my heart of hearts, and most deserving of a live-action adaptation. I’d love to see how those fart/poop jokes translate on screen, to be honest. But in all seriousness, it is GR8GR9.
God of Bath by Ha Ilkwon
(Pictured above.) If you’re like me and you were devastated by the end of 10th Dimension Boys, God of Bath fills (heh) that void very nicely. It’s outrageous/nonsensical and the kind of webtoon that makes you say “this is so stupid” but in REALITY it is a masterpiece. *click*
Magical 12th Graders by seri/Biwan
The only one I’m semi-actively reading at the moment. I think the title is a pretty shallow representation of the story itself, which delves into the ethics of being a magical girl. It’s really well done, suspenseful AND funny.
Orange Marmalade by Seokwoo
Orange Marmalade is just so CRINGE, hahah. It’s a little reductive. Baek Mari is a Mary Sue and Jaemin is her Gary Stu counterpart. You’re probably better off watching the drama instead. And even that wasn’t great, but sometimes the heart wants to watch a high school drama about vampires…
Duty After School by Ha Ilkwon
I stayed up until 6AM reading this. SO. WOW. If South Korea had a big comic culture, this would have been great serialized/hit it big. Funny, but gutting. Emphasis on the gutting. This cemented Ha Ilkwon as my favorite webtoon artist.
Cheese in the Trap by Soonkki
I told myself I wasn’t going to get involved in this circus and yet I caught up with everything LINE had to offer. Then I read all (ALL!) the Odd Squad Scanlations I could. I was in deep! It’s a great psychological thriller/romance with some really interesting characters. It’s also a bit of a slow burn, since you can go chapters without seeing certain characters (like cutie Euntaek), but I really like that slice-of-life aspect about it. If Orange Marmalade is shoujo, then CITT is on that josei tip.
