Rather than waiting to collect all my thoughts about the dramas I’m watching in one post, I’m going to try and post about them semi-indiscriminately. I always end up waiting until I’ve watched just enough episodes to make a post, but by then my thoughts are already outdated! And so the endless list of drafts grows longer…
Anyway, Kageri Yuku Natsu (WOWOW / 2015) deftly unseated a couple of my personal favorites for best directing. It is SO stunning.
This was typical of WOWOW mini-series and others of its ilk: tragic event happens in the past, CONSEQUENCES!!!, series of events lead to a re-investigation of the supposed “facts”, and new truths are unearthed. Not much character development here. Watabe Atsuro isn’t so much the lead as he is an expository character (and a journalist to boot, how very convenient). Like a lot of mystery dramas, the truth is revealed right at the end, but I don’t think it made “Kageri Yuku Natsu” any less interesting. I actually thought the ending put it a cut above what I’ve watched before — it was actually a little harrowing and surprising. And also very gorgeous sad in its execution. The kind of stuff that makes you go “daaaaaaaang.”
(And serious question, has Watabe Atsuro ever done a rom-com? I’d like to see him in a rom-com.)

She issssss (and I didn’t even notice until a week after the fact), but her role is very minor! I’d watch it anyway!
